Popcorn Aran Blanket

The basic inspiration for this blanket came from Darla Sims’ “Aran Sampler Afghan” block 17, available through The Needlecraft Shop (#842311) at www.needlecraftshop.com.
Materials: 21 oz. white worsted weight yarn
2 oz. light blue (or pink, etc.) worsted weight yarn
(I used Red Heart Super Saver White and Light Blue)
Size I hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Time to complete: 18-20 hours
Finished size: 33” x 38”
(For a longer blanket, add extra hdc rows in multiples of 2 at rows 20 AND 60 equally and adjust row numbers accordingly.)
Gauge: 14 hdc & 11 rows = 4”
Abbreviations:
Ch = chain
Cl st= cluster stitch
Ea = each
Hdc = half double crochet
Pc = popcorn stitch
Sp = space
St = stitch
Yo=yarn over
Directions:
Note: For all even rows, repeat Row 2.
Row 1: Ch 109, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in ea ch across, ch 2, turn: 108 hdc.
Row 2: Hdc in ea st across, ch 2, turn: 108 hdc.
Row 3: Hdc in next 4 sts, *pc in next st, (hdc in next 7 sts, pc in next st) twice, hdc in next 10 sts, repeat from * 2 times, pc in next st, (hdc in next 7 sts, pc in next st) twice, hdc in last 5 sts, ch 2, turn.
Row 5: Hdc in next 6 sts, *pc in next st, (hdc in next 3 sts, pc in next st) 3 times, hdc in next 14 sts, repeat from * 2 times, pc in next st, (hdc in next 3 sts, pc in next st) 3 times, hdc in last 7 sts, ch 2, turn.
Row 7: Hdc in next 8 sts, (pc in next st, hdc in next 7 sts, pc in next st, hdc in next 18sts) three times, pc in next st, hdc in next 7 sts, pc in next st, hdc in last 9 sts, ch 2, turn.
Row 9: Repeat row 5.
Rows 11-15: Repeat rows 3-7.
Row 17: Repeat row 5.
Row 19: Repeat row 3.
Rows 20-42: Repeat row 2.
Row 43: Hdc in next 18 sts, *pc in next st, (hdc in next 7 sts, pc in next st) twice, hdc in next 10 sts, repeat from * once, pc in next st, (hdc in next 7 sts, pc in next st) twice, hdc in last 18 sts, ch 2, turn.
Row 45: Hdc in next 20 sts, *pc in next st, (hdc in next 3 sts, pc in next st) 3 times, hdc in next 14 sts, repeat from * once, pc in next st, (hdc in next 3 sts, pc in next st) 3 times, hdc in last 20 sts, ch 2, turn.
Row 47: Hdc in next 22 sts, (pc in next st, hdc in next 7 sts, pc in next st, hdc in next 18sts) twice, pc in next st, hdc in next 7 sts, pc in next st, hdc in last 22 sts, ch 2, turn.
Row 49: Repeat row 45.
Rows 51-55: Repeat rows 43-47.
Row 57: Repeat row 45.
Row 59: Repeat row 43.
Rows 60-82: Repeat row 2.
Rows 83-99: Repeat rows 3-19.
Rows 100-101: Repeat row 2. Do not finish off.
Border:
Row 1: With right side facing, ch 2, 2 hdc in end of last row, hdc in end of ea. row down the side, 3 hdc in corner, hdc in ea hdc across, around, sl st in 2nd ch of beginning ch-2, finish off.
Special stitch: cluster stitch (cl st): Yo, insert hook in st indicated, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook, (yo, insert hook in same st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times, yo, draw through all 5 loops on hook.
Row 2: Change to blue (pink, etc.) yarn. Sl st in middle hdc of corner, ch 3, (yo, insert hook in same st, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook) 4 times, yo, draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 2, *(sk next hdc, work cl st in next hdc, ch 1) repeat around to 2nd hdc before middle hdc of corner, cl st, sk next hdc, ch 2, cl st in middle hdc in corner, ch 2, repeat pattern around from * to beginning cl st, ch 2, sl st in top of beginning cl st, finish off.
Row 3: Change back to white yarn. Sl st in corner cl st, 3 sc in same st, 3 sc in next ch-2 sp, 2 sc in ea ch-1 across, (3 sc in ch-2 sp, 3 sc in corner cl st, 3 sc in ch-2 sp, 2 sc in ea ch-1 across) repeat around to last ch-2 sp, 3 sc in last ch-2 sp, sl st in beginning sc, finish off.
